Function & Importance:
Oil seals (also called shaft seals or lip seals) are critical components that seal rotating shafts where they pass through engine housings. They prevent engine oil from leaking out while also keeping contaminants from entering the engine. The seal lip rides on the rotating shaft surface and must maintain constant contact to prevent leaks. Worn or damaged oil seals cause oil leaks, potential bearing damage from oil loss, and contamination of internal components.
OEM Quality:
Genuine Yanmar OEM oil seals are manufactured from materials specifically formulated to resist engine oil, heat, and the wear from shaft rotation. They feature precision-molded seal lips with proper spring tension for reliable sealing. Using genuine OEM seals ensures proper fit, correct seal lip design, and reliable performance.
When to Replace:
Oil seals should be replaced during engine rebuilds, whenever shafts are removed, or when experiencing oil leaks. Seals deteriorate over time due to heat, oil exposure, shaft rotation, and normal wear. Signs of seal failure include visible oil leaks, oil-soaked areas around seals, or low engine oil level. Always replace oil seals whenever shafts are removed – never reuse old seals as they will likely leak.
Seal Lip Protection:
The seal lip rides on the shaft surface and must maintain constant contact to prevent leaks. A scored, grooved, or damaged shaft surface will cause premature seal failure. Always inspect the shaft seal surface for damage when replacing seals – if the shaft is damaged, it must be replaced or repaired before installing a new seal.
Installation:
Clean seal bore thoroughly before installation. Inspect shaft seal surface for grooves, scoring, or damage – repair or replace shaft if damaged. Lubricate seal lip with clean engine oil before installation. Use proper seal installation tool to prevent damage and ensure seal is square and fully seated. Install with seal lip facing toward oil side (inboard). Never hammer directly on seal.
Service Best Practices:
Never reuse old oil seals – always install new seals during service. Ensure shaft surface is smooth and polished where seal lip rides. Check seal installation depth and orientation. Fill engine with proper oil and check for leaks after installation and initial engine operation.
